THE BIRTH OF PHEENIX
A GENDER REVEAL STORY
01 about
Birth of Pheenix:
This project is to love myself. It is to celebrate this beautiful body that I have, to love all the unlovable parts, the lovable parts, and every spot, wrinkle, scar and roll. This is an act of rebellion in this society, a war cry in a society that wants my Blackness to be empty and malleable, that wants my Gender Identity to fit into a binary, my Sexuality to be “normal” and my existence to fit in boxes so that I may be defined, categorized and therefore accepted.
I'm a gender-fluid, Black, Fat, Afro-latinx, Taino, Pansexual human who is ready to love themselves in all my glory! This is my coming out story in photography, stay tuned.
Using photography, I will remake the Birth of Venus. I will attempt to capture the complexities of my existence while still embracing the extraordinary human that I have grown to be.
“but I stopped looking for acceptance when I actually found myself and understood myself and I realized that my life is not for someone else to accept. See, we look at these things like acceptance and tolerance and we don’t realize how degrading it is you’re already putting yourself on a pedestal over another human being and we are supposed to be equal. So therefore, I don’t need you to accept me, I may want you to understand me but as far as you accepting me that just means that I believe you are greater than I am or I believe that you have some kind of privilege or authority over my life…”- Dominiquet A. R. Jackson

HUMANS
Maya Angelou:
I“You only are free when you realize you belong no place — you belong every place — no place at all.”- Maya Angelou

This was crucial to my growth and self acceptance

Brene Brown:
“I feel I belong everywhere I go, no matter where it is or who I’m with as long as I never betray myself. And the minute I become who you want me to be in order to fit in and make sure people like me is the moment I no longer belong anywhere.”
